Exhibitionistas Podcast

Conversations about Contemporary Art Exhibitions, Artists & Theory–For Everyone

Exhibitionistas is an independent podcast that brings contemporary art's latest exhibitions, artists and ideas directly to your ears.

Exhibitionistas is an independent podcast that brings contemporary art's latest exhibitions, artists and ideas directly to your ears through original episode formats. Hosted by art curator and founder, Joana P. R. Neves, our episodes explore current London solo exhibitions in unmissable art museums such as Tate Modern and Hayward Gallery, through engaging conversations between an "art insider", Joana, and a string of guests, all "art outsiders" who do not default to the field's jargon. Together, they connect art with the world of today to help listeners form their own opinions about contemporary visual arts... and life. Special episodes welcome exceptional figures of the industry who candidly share their professional art journey. And when you're feeling poetic, shorter episodes deliver art topics through storytelling, turning ideas into audio art experiences, perfect for those who are unable to leave home or leading busy lives. For art professionals and art-curious folks alike, Exhibitionistas is a way to experience exhibitions vicariously, to gain deeper insights into the shows you've seen, and to learn what contemporary art really is about.

Why a podcast about contemporary art?

Exhibitionistas replaces the usual off-putting "neutral academic voice” with a distinct profile and storytelling. We're organically educational, and proudly subjective–an exciting multi-format podcast described as “an absolute joy” by a Spotify listener. Unlike TV or Radio, podcasting is a malleable structure creating community around research through context, shared knowledge and interactivity with audiences. Contemporary art's coverage by traditional media outlets is reduced to soundbites of million-pound auction sales or cryptic reviews.
So we decided to offer a platform of discovery for such a wealth of creativity based on a twenty-year career in the art field as curator, artistic director, writer and independent scholar.

An exciting new media platform still largely undiscovered...

I’m a self-taught podcaster–as most podcasters are–, a female independent professional, often splitting my time between writing, curating and mentoring artists.
I'm keeping all Exhibitionistas episodes free for now, an added hurdle for monetisation, especially now that the industry is becoming corporate and celebrity oriented, while still being frowned upon by many.
Recent news have shed light on the peculiar status of the "content creator": digital creators are not recognised legally although they often work more hours and in worse conditions than their TV or Radio counterparts. YouTube has launched the first creator consultation campaign in the UK and has approached the government to ask for formal recognition of the profession.

From the Independent: “Content creator should be formally and officially recognised as a job, YouTube has said.
A lack of recognition for those who make videos on YouTube and other sites is holding back the industry, the video company has claimed."

As a freelance professional, I also think that we must do a better job in communicating about podcasting and digital content creation . Before and after pressing the "record" button, there is an enormous amount of work such as writing, researching, scripting, voice training, targeted industry research, endless hours of editing (episodes and social media clips), outreach and eventually sponsor pitching.
But even though I started my Substack page (a platform for writers) more than a year after Exhibitionistas, I still have far more paid memberships there. How come? Because podcasting is new.

And I'll tell you more. Starting a podcast means facing the following conditions:

  • often, one person is doing the work of a 5 person team;
  • there aren't many grants so, added difficulty in finding financial support;
  • consumer support is still marginal.

   The good news is that you can change that.

Refreshing approach to art!

What a pair! Funny real and meaningful podcast… Love how clear this podcast shows that to be touched by exhibitions one only needs to bring its own experiences and open mind. I was really touched by this approach: not always easy to find in contemporary art and life in general.
